Khludeu Mystic

Playable Species
The mischievous khludeu will baffle and amaze all that they come across!

Makers of mischief

Khludeu are born of the Fae, not a species itself, but a group of creatures known to themselves as Estrai.

Khludeu are some of the most magically inclined Estrai, and it shows. Their diminutive frames hide incredible power-- they are not to be underestimated. Even the weakest Khludeu can leave any human with a nasty curse that will sting for days. Some of the most powerful ones can leave hexes that harm entire bloodlines.

Yet above all, Khludeu are fairly harmless. Their main goal is to amuse themselves, it seems. They delight in pranking whatever creatures cross their paths, and relish in the confusion and frustration that follows.

Anatomy

Khludeu are rather small creatures - They're only about 2ft tall, and they appear rather cute. Like their cousins, the Zampers, Khludeu are diminutive rodentlike creatures. Their wings are rather large for their size, and their snouts are longer and pointier. Their fangs are also sharp and long, capable of a nasty bite.

Khludeu once took the form of a much larger creature, a similar creature with a much taller and slender frame. They lost the ability to maintain this form after being afflicted by their magical curse, and they are forever bitter about it.

Khludeu stand upright, but they don't have anthropomorphic proportions, this doesn't mean you can't draw them like an anthro though!

Hands

Like their cousins, Khludeu have rather dexterous hands that are capable of fine movement and precision. These hands are perfectly suited to the manufacturing of magical objects.

Khludeu have two "thumbs" on each paw, each thumb on opposite sides of the paw, allowing them better grip and manipulation of objects.

Face

Khludeu faces appear less like rats, and more similar to that of an opossum. Their teeth are rodentlike, however, with sharp incisors.

Khludeu have a set of sharp "teeth" that adorn their lips. These aren't actual teeth and are made of soft cartilage.

Feet

Khludeu feet are almost identical to their hands. They're not only good for scampering about, but also are just as prehensile as their hands, meaning that any khludeu can use all four limbs at once!

Wings

Khludeu are born with batlike, leathery wings. Through magical manipulation, these wings can be hidden, adjusted, or transformed.

The practice of changing wings to "cloth" is almost universal and prevents their giant wings from encumbering them too much. Khludeu with more esoteric forms of wings don't seem capable of flight, that is, until they use their magic to float above you anyway.

Social

(As with all species, this is merely a guideline for how khludeu commonly act and isn't the law for how your character should act, every khludeu is its own individual personality)

Khludeu society encourages individuals to further their own efforts and progress as much as possible, which can lead to a very "me-first" type of view that can come off as entitled. An average khludeu is very likely to think of themselves as being better than everyone else, even when it isn't true. Most khludeu will be willing to fight on this fact, firing back with magical spells if their egos are bruised or their competency is challenged.

Khludeu don't take insults very well.

Khludeu society as a whole is very lax on restrictions, excepting heinous crimes. As a result, a khludeu placed in an outside society can come off as very rude, inconsiderate, or selfish. Stealing to them might be more like "borrowing", a khludeu might not knock before entering a room, etc. As a whole, khludeu come off as annoying, but not inherently malicious... though there are definitely some who have more than a penchant for trickery, and instead border into outright cruelty.

Behavior

Khludeu also have a tendency for mischief, and will harass, prank, and mess with other species to no end, bamboozling them for their own amusement, but they can be kept at bay if they're sufficiently entertained.

Relationship to Humans

Khludeu treat humans like they do most other species, though a khludeu might find most humans' lack of magic hilarious and may poke fun at them for it.

As competition and magical power are a high part of their society, if a human manages to fire back and show a Khludeu their might, they may be thoroughly impressed, and even may ally with the person.

It is for this reason that Khludeu are often seen in the company of witches as their familiars, mutually helping each other hone and discover their powers. A witch that is allied with a Khludeu is one of incredibly high standing, and a testament of their power. A Khludeu will not simply respect anyone, so having one complacent in your company is a rather big deal to any witch. Most witches only dream of having a creature like a Khludeu at their side.

Homes

Khludeu homes tend to be very versatile. Most of them live within the fae realm, but a majority of them tend to be world-wanderers, and they can easily adapt to almost any conditions or scenery. They're extremely resourceful with adapting what is around them to make temporary or even long-term shelter. A magical spell can often finish out a shoddy bit of construction, elevating it into something livable or even luxurious.

Khludeu homes often are enchanted so that they are invisible to trespassers, or have some other form of warding to keep others out.

Magic

Khludeu are incredibly powerful creatures, capable of many magical feats. If one can imagine it, they can probably do it.

However, as a result of their curse, most Khludeu require the use of a magical "focus" item to access their powers, such as a gem, spell book, wand, or orb. Those who have been practicing for many, many years, or who have access to powers from a higher plane or god may forgo this limitation.  (It's not strict canon that will be enforced, but if you do want to stick to canon, you can have your khludeu abandon their magical item if they max out their proficiency or innate magic, or if they gain a divine trait)

Khludeu are adept at Mystic magic, focusing more on the versatile instead of offensive capabilities of that magical class. They do have use of offensive spells, but these often aren't their priority.

History

Long ago, it's said that--tired of the mischief of the Estrai--  all other species banded up to teach them a lesson and delivered them a magical curse. Each Estrai was afflicted by something that targeted what they loved deepest, yet each one has still managed to overcome their handicaps and persevere.

It's said that the Khludeu were cursed by taking the things they cherished most, their impressive height and ability to channel magic by their own hands. This curse, like for all estrai, has impacted khludeu society deeply, elevating their focus on self-assurance even more as if to prove to outsiders that they are still capable of what they once were.

Thanks to the help of the ever-wise Oracle, the species has thrived.
