From what is known about rogue stars, their appearance is not the "true" look for their species. Their collision with the planet's surface is harsh, and like any meteor, they "burn up" in the atmosphere. Their descent causes multiple layers of material to shed from their bodies, resulting in a single remaining "core." They possess fiery trails that follow them wherever they go.
Migration
Once a year, swaths of rogue stars take flight. They fly through the cosmos in droves, streaking past planets and moons. For Merlot, their travel path roughly lines up with its month of summer, leading to an annual display of bright, twinkling lights.
Watching the migration of rogue stars is an activity that all on Merlot take enjoyment in. Everyone eagerly awaits the annual migration year after year.
Sometimes a star may get nudged off its path or otherwise lose its "family." When this happens, it's common for the star to fall to the planets or moons below. These events are what give them the name "rogue" star. They're stars that have fallen a bit off course...

Scholars have long since studied mythological texts about "living stars", even before the sentience of these creatures was discovered. Texts from various cultures vary, but many describe "animate meteors" that bestow well-wishes and fortune upon those who gaze upon them.
Some cultures associate these creatures with The Artist, claiming that they are its messengers of the cosmos.

These "stars" appear to originate from space. Where exactly remains to be seen-- picking them out from the skies is a monumental task.
Very, very little is known about the rogue stars, including how they operate, and their goal in Merlot. The phenomenon of rogue stars was only recently uncovered. Until recently, it was believed that they were like any other meteor, though to the shock of many, it turns out that some stars may be staring back...
