Subtypes are special versions of the various species on Merlot. They have different characteristics to the norm, and offer up new ways to customize your characters.
How can I unlock a subtype?
Subtypes can be unlocked through two ways:
- Subtype items in the Market of Metamorphosis
- Subtype questline
Can I use a subtype's traits without having the subtype of the trait?
Yes. All traits that have a subtype attached to them are free game for characters of all subtypes.
For example: Ringlings with no subtype can still have bashful wings, real wings, etc. A ringling with the omen subtype can still apply harbinger traits.
Having a trait that is associated with a subtype does NOT grant that subtype. Only using a subtype item or completing the quest will grant the subtype.
How do I use subtype items?
Apply them in a design update like any other trait essence. Subtype items apply your chosen subtype as well as a select number of possible traits (NOT all of them.)
If you've completed the questline, then you have free access to your chosen subtype, as well as all of its traits, for free.
How many subtypes can a character have?
As many as are possible.
Hybridization
PLEASE NOTE: "Hybrid" characters must possess at least 1 of the unique characteristics of all its subspecies. If a subtype would conflict with another in a way where all of its characteristics would not be able to be displayed, then this subtype cannot be hybridized.
Example: Omen ringlings are required to have pointed legs. Harbinger ringlings are required to have a gnarled face or teeth. Hybridizing would require your ringling to have the pointed legs AND gnarled face/teeth. (The harbinger still has one required trait displayed)
